Mathematics Education (6-12)
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Students must have a grade point average (GPA) of 2.50 or better in basic general education course component OR a 2.50 GPA from a completed baccalaureate program.
- Students must meet all “Gordon Rule” requirements.

Students must have a grade of “C” or better in the required courses taken as part of the General Education Preparation Program.

Students must successfully complete a criminal background check, have proof of medical insurance, liability insurance and a pre-admission interview by the College of Education Admissions Committee.
Program Overview
Our Mathematics education program enables graduates to meet all of the academic requirements for Florida Certification in Mathematics (Grades 6-12).
Students are required to complete a set of courses in the Mathematics Department. In these courses, they develop essential understandings in the disciplinary field of mathematics that are necessary for the effective teaching of secondary school mathematics.
The required Mathematics Education sequence includes courses and practica emphasizing ideas related to mathematics curricula, mathematics instruction, mathematics learning, assessment and technology. The capstone of the program is the student teaching experience (internship) during the final semester
What is Mathematics Education?
Mathematics Education is a field of study associated with the learning, observation, and teaching of numbers, quantities, arrangements, structures, patterns, shapes, and space as well as algebraic equations, geometry, and theorems etc., and is used to understand the world around us.
Why should I consider majoring in Secondary Mathematics Education?
If you are passionate about mathematics and want to share this knowledge, you might want to consider becoming a math teacher. You might enjoy combining your passion for mathematics with your love for children and young adults through a career in teaching.
A mathematics educator should have a thorough understanding of times tables, fractions algebra, geometry, statistics, calculus, and more. Teachers of mathematics should be able to teach their students how to solve problems, break down equations, and recognize and use mathematical formulas. Good communication skills and a positive attitude are also essential.
What will I learn from studying Secondary Mathematics Education?
Outside of the given math courses students must take to complete this program, students majoring in our Mathematics Education program will also develop skills, concepts, and methodologies in the following areas:
Child Development, which will provide students with the basic information on child development prenatally to adolescence; Psychology with emphasis on behavioral phenomena, learning, motivation, personality adjustment, and assessment techniques; The history and development of the American education system from pre-school to higher education; Philosophies of education; Public speaking, and more!

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students seeking program completion from FAMU’s state approved teacher education programs must successfully complete the following requirements:
- Admission to the Professional Teacher Education Program
- All course work with the required cumulative GPA of 2.50
- Student teaching experience
- A portfolio which documents mastery of the Twelve Florida Accomplished Practices
- Pass General Knowledge Tests and all subtests of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE)
- External Evaluation of satisfactory teaching ability
- Internal Evaluation of satisfactory teaching ability
